Before the War Charles Henry Butterfield worked in Denaby Main at the Colliery.
On the 1911 census Charles is listed as living with father, Thomas, and his mother, Hannah, and his four sisters. They lived at No 5, Sarah Street in Mexborough. His father was a glass bottle hand at the glass works. They later moved to 15 Edlington Street, Denaby Main. The photograph shows Charles with his sister Selina.
Charles joined the Army in February of 1917 when he was 18 years old. He was first in the Leicestershire Regiment (Service Number 30111) and then in the Lincolnshire Regiment (Service Number 44567).
Charles was killed three weeks after arriving at the Front at the Battle of Bapaume. He died on 25 March 1918 aged 19. He is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial.
