John William Murray was born in Newcastle upon Tyne on the 14th April 1880.
In 1901 and 1911 he lived with his sister Mary Jane and brother-in-law Christopher Ward and their family in New Elvet, Durham. See The Ward Family Story.
Before the war John was a cartman working with the dray horses for the brewery and had a passion for horses.
John enlisted in 1915 and was posted to France in April 1916 in the Royal Field Artillery (No. 751045) as a Driver. It is believed he transferred to the Horse Artillery as a Gunner (No. 2780).
John was demobbed on the 30th April, 1919 and later worked for the council.
John never married, and died on 22nd January, 1963.
