Broughton Hill was born on the 4th December 1894 in Doncaster to George Hill, a farmer, and his wife Edith Eliza. By 1911 the family is living at Firbeck Farm, Firbeck in Rotherham.
Broughton Hill enlisted on the 4th September 1914 with the 1st Battalion of the Coldstream Guards. Private Hill, service number 11432, first entered into the war on the 22nd December 1914 serving in France.
On the 12th January 1915 Private Broughton Hill was captured and taken as a prisoner of war at La Bassee before being moved to Menesburg Internment Camp, Germany. Whilst imprisoned Private Hill was put to work in the salt mine. On the 7th November 1916 Broughton Hill was killed whilst working in the salt mine. It is believed blasting operations dislodged some rock and he was killed when they fell.
Private Broughton Hill is buried in the Berlin South-Western Cemetery. He was awarded the Victory Medal, the British Medal and the 1915 Star Medal.
