Sgt Fredrick (Fred) King

Fredrick (Fred) was born on the 13th November 1886 Nether Hoyland, Barnsley. He was the son of Louisa and James Samuel King.

At the time of the 1891 census, Fred was living at Chapel Street, Barnsley, with his parents and three sisters: Harriet, Charlotte and Olive. His father was working as a stationary engine driver.

By 1901, Fred and his family had moved to Pontefract. Fred was 15 and was working as a colliery pony driver, and his father was now working as an engine mender.

 

On the 5th December 1909, Fred, aged 23 married Essie Briggs who was aged 18. They got married at St Giles and St Mary in Pontefract.

On the 28th August 1914, Fred enlisted in the 3rd battalion of the KOYLI regiment. He was wounded in Etaples late Summer 1916, and was eventually discharged from the army on the 12th March 1919.

In December 1976 in Selby, Yorkshire, Fred passed away.
